Using a Pendulum

by Marcy White on September 25, 2010

The first thing to know about using a pendulum is that you must be in a state of being centered and grounded in your energy being.  If you are feeling anxious or you are too invested in the answer to the question you are asking then YOU ARE NOT IN THE PROPER STATE TO USE THE PENDULUM. Have someone else ask the question for you.  Call me if you want.

A pendulum is typically one chain with a crystal, stone, or a bead on the end.  However after you get adept at using the pendulum you can use a necklace as well.  Hold the chain very lightly between your thumb and forefinger.  Make sure your thumb and forefinger are parallel so that the finger is not slightly on top of or below the thumb.  You can start moving the pendulum in any direction while asking it to show you a yes.  Repeat continuously to the pendulum ‘Show me a yes, show me a yes, show me a yes.’

After you have received a direction (back and forth, sideways, counterclockwise, clockwise) for a yes ask the pendulum to show you a no.  Again repeat the request ‘Show me a no, show me a no, show me a no.’  Once you have your yes and no directions you know that any other direction indicates an answer of ‘I don’t know, No opinion, or It doesn’t matter.’

Be patient.  It may take awhile.  If you are getting nowhere after several attempts you may want to ask a tree or a plant to show you a yes.  I have found them to be extremely responsive to the pendulum and to the attention you give them,

Wow. How do I learn not to be invested in the answer???? I know that somewhere inside of me I definitely WANT it to tell me what I want to hear. (This probably explains my hit-and-miss ratio on “correct” answers in retrospect.) Also, when asking a plant to help, do you mean through the pendulum, or a sense of an answer directly from the plant or tree? Thank you for the great site!

Hi Amanda,
There definitely are times that we are very invested in the answer and that’s when it is best to have someone who isn’t vested to ask the question for you. After you do the grounding and centering exercises so much you know what it feels like to be in a space of calm acceptance. Therefore it becomes quite easy to recognize when you are not in that space. You can be in the ‘space’ and still know what answer you want but because you are truly in the ‘space’ you are not influencing the pendulum. I have gotten numerous answers I do not want so I know this works.

With plants I am saying ask them to show you a yes. So, start the pendulum moving in some direction and then ask the plant (or tree) to show you a yes or a no. For example, if you started moving the pendulum back and forth and asked for a yes it would probably move in a circle. For some reason most pendulums move in circle for yes, either clockwise or counter clockwise.

Many people chose to ‘program’ their pendulums. The most commonly accepted practice for this is to move the pendulum in a clockwise direction and then tell the pendulum that this movement represents a yes. Then move it counter clockwise and tell the pendulum this movement is a no. I happen to prefer freedom of choice and allow my pendulum to chose it’s own path. Ha, Ha
